Six pages of stunning photography, detailed diagrams, and building-specific technical notes published by High Performing Buildings explain how Design Engineers worked with Indian Creek Nature Center, the only non-profit nature center in Iowa, to create a building that creates as much energy as it uses.
The project has pursued the Living Building Challenge Petal certification, which requires net zero energy usage based on operational data. With a payback period of only 1.8 years, this grid-connected project demonstrates the incredible capability for energy efficient projects to minimize their footprint and impact to nearly zero.
“Using the construction of their new building as an opportunity to amplify their mission and promote a sustainable future through environmental education, land protection, and nature interaction.” writes Dwight Schumm, Managing Principal at Design Engineers. Dwight worked with Joe Chappell and Tim Lentz of Design Engineers on both the Indian Creek project, and on authoring the article.
